I think removing the stand takes away from why the angle was needed for the shot.

No, it still makes sense without it and actually adds a sense of movement to the subject, like you caught him while he was goovin' instead of you caught him like this because you were on the side of the stage.
 
Unless they obscure the musicians' faces or hands, onstage incidentals like mic stands rarely bother me. They are part of the scene. I appreciate what others are saying, and it is a fine clean shot without it. But it is a fine clean shot with it, too - good lighting, tonality, and a nice focused expression on the face of the subject. None of this is lost by the presence of the mic stand.
