Did You Know... · Despite the proven benefits of physical activity, more than 50% of American adults do not get enough physical activity to provide health benefits.
· About 9 million children over the age of 6 are considered overweight in this country.
· Overweight adolescents have a 70% chance of becoming overweight or obese adults.
· A sedentary person requires fewer calories, for example, than a very active person. Balance the calories you eat with those you burn.
· Choose a variety of fruits, vegetables and whole grains each day.

My Psych instructor told us a story today...he told me that he has a friend who is an undertaker. When his friend first started out in the business, he had to order, on average, one extra large casket a year for an obese person that had passed away. He now averages 6 or 7 a MONTH!

And of course I find you when you post in the Test forum....no one ever does, so it sticks out when someone posts here!

About Nutrition and Physical Activity... · Physical activity simply means movement of the body that uses energy. Walking, gardening, briskly pushing a baby stroller, climbing the stairs, playing soccer, or dancing the night away are all good examples of being active.
· For health benefits, physical activity should be moderate or vigorous and add up to at least 30 minutes a day.
· Being physically active is a key element in living a longer, healthier, happier life. It can help relieve stress and can provide an overall feeling of well-being. Physical activity can also help you achieve and maintain a healthy weight and lower risk for chronic disease.
· Healthy eating is associated with reduced risk for many diseases, including the three leading causes of death:
Heart disease
Some cancers
Stroke
· Healthy eating in childhood and adolescence is important for proper growth and development and can prevent health problems such as:
Obesity
Dental caries I
Iron deficiency anemia.
· Eating healthier foods is good for everybody. Children tend to mimic their parents, so it pays to be a good role model.
 
What You Can Do... · To prevent weight gain, try about 60 minutes of moderate physical activity on most days.
· Park the car farther away from your destination.
· Take the stairs instead of the elevator or escalator.
· Exercise while watching TV (for example, use hand weights, stationary bicycle/treadmill/stair climber, or stretch).
· Know where you at with your physical activity and where you want to go.
· Set a positive example by leading an active lifestyle yourself, and make physical activity part of your family’s daily routine such as designating time for family walks or playing active games together.
· Establish a routine. Set aside time everyday for physical activity. You can break up your physical activity into 10-15 minute sessions throughout the day.
· Choose the most nutritionally rich foods you can from each food group each day – those packed with vitamins, minerals, fiber, and other nutrients, but lower in calories. Pick foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and fat-free or low-fat milk and milk products more often.
· Becoming a healthier you isn't just about eating healthy – it’s also about physical activity. Regular physical activity is important for your overall health and fitness. It also helps you control body weight by balancing the calories you take in as food with the calories you expend each day.
· Many restaurants serve more food than one person needs at one meal. Take control of the amount of food that ends up on your plate by splitting an entrée with a friend. Or, ask the waiter for a "to-go" box and wrap up half your meal as soon as it's brought to the table.
· When eating or snacking in front of the TV, put the amount that you plan to eat into a bowl or container instead of eating straight from the package. It's easy to overeat when your attention is focused on something else.

Did You Know... · Bullying can include punching, shoving and other acts that hurt people physically, spreading bad rumors about people, keeping certain people out of a "group", teasing people in a mean way, getting certain people to "gang up" on others.

About Bullying... · Studies show that between 15-25% of U.S. students are bullied with some frequency, while 15-20% report they bully others with some frequency.
· Young people who bully are more likely than those who don't bully to skip school and drop out of school. They are also more likely to smoke, drink alcohol and get into fights.
· Children who bully are more likely to get into fights, vandalize property, and drop out of school. And 60% of boys who were bullies in middle school had at least one criminal conviction by the age of 24.
 
What You Can Do... · When you see or hear bullying:
Immediately stop the bullying.
Refer to the relevant school rules against bullying, if appropriate.
Support the bullied child in a way that allows him or him to regain self-control, to “save face,” and to feel supported and safe from retaliation.
If appropriate, impose immediate consequences for students who bully others.
