My guess is that the room was basically dark when the exposure began. Or maybe the light in the cieling was on when it started? It must have been. It was set on the self-timer so that you could get to the lightswitch. When you heard the shutter, you cut the light, then moved to one of the other positions and turned the light on and off, then repeated for the third position.

Am I close?

id say this is it, as the 3 positions have something to do with a a light source, 1 is the light switch, 2 is the tv and 3 is the lamp
