hmm the sad fate of many a fly that is.

I rather like where you are going with the second shot - though somehow I feel that your whites are just way too strong - with a dead subject don't be afraid to do a bit of DIY studio work - its rather easy and simple with smaller subjects than it is with people. If you have a tripod use it - then you can use whatever shutter speed you like and not worry about shake - you can use a low ISO as well which is always desirable.
A little less light (maybe a bit of paper in the way of the light to diffuse it a bit - and then experiment with different shutter speeds to get the shot
