Toddler portraits ???

I find that using the continuous shot feature on my camera works well for toddlers. You may get some happy accidents!

DOH, fell for another one.

For shooting toddlers I highly recommend back button focusing. It allows you to focus and take the shot very quickly, rather than pressing the shutter button down halfway, waiting for the camera to focus, and than press the rest of the way for the picture... by than the toddler is usually moved (quite often right out of the frame).

For your make of camera you can just google "how to set back button focusing for ____ camera".

Another thing would be to try letting the toddler play by a window or outside and trying to not use the flash. Play around with natural light and I think you will find your pictures will have more depth to them as the natural shadows remain in tact.

Hope that helps abit. Just have fun with it. :)
