Keep in mind that photographers advertising on Facebook or Craigslist or any other free site is most likely operating on a shoe-string budget.
That usually means they haven't:
-Bought insurance
-Registered their "business" with the state and/or IRS
-Paid taxes on their income
-Paid an attorney to develop legal customer contracts, release forms etc for them
-Invested in the necessary photography equipment
-etc
If they go out of business for any of the above reasons after they have your check... well... you're screwed. If they screw up the shoot and their ducks aren't in a row... then you're both screwed.
