Ok I have a photo of a swan, I don't know what species, but what I want to do is make colour and sharpening edits to both the swan and the background but I want to make alterations individually. My problem is I can't do it and it's driving me insane looking at it, I have forgotten a pile of stuff on PS because I have not been using it for a while.

I want to be able to do what Binga says in the link below but I just don't not know what I'm doing. A link to a relevant youtube video would be much appreciated.

Select the swan and move it to another layer
Then edit and sharpen the layers separately.
