Well, w/ the BW conversion, I might try applying a high-contrast curve to the color image, then in the BW conversion pulling back on the red channel. That bumped the contrast and got rid of a lot of the midtones that were worrying me a little bit. With your permission, I'll post up what I mean.

I think I know what you mean. Make the color higher contrast and run the bw through a red filter. Pretty much....

sounds like you already did it, might as well post them up now and see what you got. LOL
