Vintage Photography

I am in search of tips on how to shoot a vintage self portrait. I want to re-create some of the portraits of the famous women of Hollywood in the 1940s. There are some gorgeous photos of Ingrid Bergman on www.moviemaidens.com that I am in love with. I am looking for tips on lighting and any suggestions that anyone is willing to provide me.

I have a black muslin backdrop, my camera (Canon XTi, Canon Speedlight 430EX and Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8-4) and an excellent hair stylist.
