I use a Canon ip6600D(I know it's replaced by the ip7000d now) printer and I'm very satisfied with the results.
It only prints up to A4 so I have to send my images off if I want larger.
Ink is reasonalbly priced and I've used many paper brands and it's worked with all of them if you match the printer set-up to that type of paper. I think the canon website has a settings list for each paper brand/type. (I'm actually not buying canon ink at the moment (mainly because I have no money) but there's a manufacturer that does ink refills for a fraction of the cost and I cannot see a difference at all in the colours (I have done comparisons), but i guess time will tell if they will fade sooner).
I have a PC, but my girlfriend uses a Mac.
I won't sway away from my PC because I'm a gaming junkie and i think there's alot more options with PC's for gaming upgrades and the likes.
So with a PC I'd recommend a dual core or maybe a quad core if your a gaming nut. I wouldn't worry about the hard drive space, external hard drives are cheap enough now to worry about that later.
