I just set the camera on program.Any help is much appreciated.

If it's a camera that has that autofocus thing, I learned a trick. Get a flashlight, make the beam as narrow as possible. Set up your camera, and shine the light where you want the focus... then press the shutter button down halfway to let it focus (should focus on the light), turn the light off, and take the picture.

Then again it may not be a digital like I'm talking about, in which case I can't help ya! :)

IMO you need more DOF (smaller apature)
i would not suggest using a zoom lens because they tend to make stuff look flat. (im assuming since you got this pic you could probably get closer to the snake..he doesnt look that dangerous...)
also im thinking more directional lighting might give a better sence of depth and "3D ness"
also also, i feel the colors in this shot are a bit blah...its washed out in spots and there is very low saturation of the colors. This could be fixed with natural light, or more diffuse artifical lighting.

also can auto focus, manual is the way to go  but thats just me
