Hi, I'm brand new here and I've come with a question that I couldn't solve with Google.

What is the professional term for the item at the end of the lens, which has curvatures on it? It looks as if it has something to do with light filtering, though I could be massively wrong.

It is a lens hood. It blocks incoming light from the sides for a clearer picture.

    Thanks for the reply.

Shaped hoods like your example are called "petal" lens hoods.

You might look up lens flair to understand why they exist.
