If I were to buy black cloth to use in a DIY brolly box or softbox, what type should I get? Obviously fireproof and probably light proof?

any ideas?

I believe they are usually made of Nylon.
'Rip-stop' nylon is better to work with because it won't rip/tear as easily as cheaper nylon.
You can get FR (fire resistant) nylon, I'm pretty sure that's what they use for making camping tents. I'm not sure that's a requirement, as it's more for stopping the spread of fire from a spark or flame. Non-FR nylon shouldn't catch fire just from the heat of a strobe (but of course, it should be designed so that the fabric isn't close to the bulb).

Thanks for the info BM. I know to use white ripstop as diffusion material, I didn't realize it was also used for black backing. Thanks again.

You might also consider lining the inside surface with a white or silver material. The black is probably mostly just for looks.
