i mostly shoot outdoor portraits, and i don't have a lens hood. i know i need one... any recomendations as to what kind? or should i get a few different kinds? they're fairly cheap. there are many to choose from and i don't know which to get. a collapsable one seems like it would be good, but...? any suggestions would be helpful. thanks in advance

I have a few collapsible ones and they are nice but don't protect the end of the lens like a hard one will. The best ones are made specifically for the particular lens. You want maximum shading without the hood creeping into the frame...which is more likely to happen with wider lenses.
