Surfing the web, I have found recommendations ranging from 200 grit grinding compound to 600 grit aluminum oxide, for making your own 4x5 view camera ground glass.

I am curious what others have used successfully.

G'day Ron

Been 50+ yrs since I played with a 4x5" film camera .... but I remember it fondly :)

with a DIY ground-glass screen, I'd pop into my local hardware shop and pick up several sheets of wet-n-dry papers for 3000 grit + 2000 + 1000 + 600 + 300 and use 'em in that order till you get a screen that you're happy with.
I suspect that you might go thru several bits of glass along the way too ... experimentation always takes time

I had one with an odd size back with no focusing glass so I made one out of some thin tissue paper.

I’d think you’d have issues with swirl patterns using sandpaper or a compound. Maybe try media blasting instead. I believe the originals were made using an acid etch.
