I was perusing the new Canon advertisement that came with the Rangefinder magazine and it mentioned the new 580EX II flash for Canon cameras. One odd addition to the flash is an independent flash sensor, just like flashes in the 70's (e.g., Vivitar, Metz, etc.). What is the independent sensor for?

I believe the sensor is similar to what they have in 'Auto Thrystor' flash units like the renowned Vivitar 283 etc. I'm thinking that this would allow you to set the unit to an F-stop (rather than manual power setting; 1/2, 1/4, etc)...when not using it in E-TTL mode (off camera, for example).
