So, even if my body (Canon Rebel XS) resurrects, I think it's time to go full frame. Should I get the 5D Mark II, or try to get a used 1DS Mark II, 5D Mark II, or original 5D? I guess it depends on my budget, but just wondering what you would do. I'd like to get a new 5D Mark II, and I can get it new on ebay for $2350, but that's still a lot to tack on my credit card. What are your thoughts? Thanks!

What would I do?

I'd go with the 1DS Mark II. But that's just me as I already shoot with a 1dMII and I'd like to have both cameras have the same layout.

If I didn't already have the 1dMII, I'd go with the 5D Mark I (used for $1000-$1200) and put the $1000 towards some glass.

For most people, I'd probably recommend the 5D mark II simply because its the latest and greatest. The 5D Mark I and 1ds Mark II are both several years behind and technology is always improving. In this case, high ISO performance was a major improvement.

btw.. any ebay store selling a 5Dmark II at $2350 would make me proceed with caution.

For me, a massive red flag goes up on the seller time2&@&^ located in Brooklyn, New York. Brookly is home to quite a number of shady bait-and-switch specialists, operating out of tiny, cramped storefronts. These "dealers" specialize in selling factory-supplied accessories back to unwitting customers who are unaware of what was included in the box from the factory--the name of the game is stripping; stripping involves things like "selling" the Canon-supplied DPP software, or "selling" the battery to the customer, and "selling" the neckstrap, etc. Another specialty of these types of dealers is the "we don't have it in stock now" answer when you balk at purchasing several hundred dollars' worth of ancillary accessories, like memory cards at triple the price, a generic battery at triple price, and an extended 'warranty' at $249, etc, etc. If you place an order, and they call you on the telephone to talk about your purchase...well...you know you're being scammed.

I could care less that the seller has 27,000 feedbacks--they state they have sold just over a dozen 5D-II's...that is a piddlingly small number of 5D-II's; any Brooklyn camera retailer worth its salt sells two or three per day. Since the camera is selling for basically $2,700 right now, and they are "selling" it for under $2,350, you really must ask yourself why that too-good-to-be-true price has resulted in sales of just over a dozen of one of the most highly sought after cameras of the last five years.

Seriously--I am sure they found 13 buyers (marks, saps, victims) who were willing to bite at the sucker bait, and who went along with the sales B.S. and bought an extended "warranty" and a generic a battery. $2,350 absolutely screams caveat emptor, at the top of its lungs, from a rooftop--in B(C)rooklin, New Yawk.

Well, do you need a 5dmkII? Is it a business buy, backed up by a legitimate need? Or do you just want one. With gear, that is always an important question.

yeah, i'm trying to turn this into something that will make some money, so yes, i need it. i want full frame and i want high ISO performance. just bought it off B&H with a 24-105L. selling my 17-40L now. anyone interested? $600. only 5 months used.

As a quick guide, if it's something expensive like a body or a lens, and it's available new at a significantly cheaper price than at B&H or Andromeda then you'll likely about to be scammed.

this.
always.

If B&H or Adorama and all their buying power cant sell something for less than eachother there is no way someone else can offer it any cheaper.

I'd say go with a 5DII, or check the B&H used section. About a bajillion 1DmkIIIs have popped up there in the last month.

My 7D is school supplies... I get to put off paying for it until I'm out of school... and by then it'll be worthless.

Debt is awesome!

I'll laugh when I explain to my non-major specific professors that I didn't buy the books for their class because I wanted a 7D instead of a 50D and a f/3.5-5.6 just wouldnt cut it for a general purpose lens. hahahaha
