Which wide angle lens to buy??

Hi,
I currently have a canon 10d and am looking for a wide angle lens to go with it. I'm thinking about the sigma 12 - 24? any suggestions on either this lens or other wide angle lens would be greatly appreciated.
I can't really afford anything over $1000

I have the Tamron 17-35mm. It's a pretty good lens, and costs around $400. It's sharp in the center, but not sharp all the way to the edges. Then again, what <$1000 wide angle lens is. What wide angle lens is period
