Which zoom? 55-250 vs 30-300

Following my trip away in Thailand, I've been meaning to get myself a zoom for the 400D.

I'm thinking either the 55-250 with IS or the 70-300 wish IS (and USM). The difference is about £100.

Is the extra 50mm at the top end (and the fact it is USM) worth the extra cash?

Any other alternatives I should consider?

I have seen several decent reviews on the new 55-250 IS...should be plenty of reach especially with the 1.6x crop factor. Just remember you get what you pay for in glass, those are both fairly low end lenses that will give you average results.

You could buy a 70-200 F4 L used for not much more and you will be getting something much much better.

I would, personally, go for the 55-250 IS. It's a very nice lens, and 250mm is more than enough for most purposes. But I would agree with Freedbaby that you should check out some used "L" lenses, as they are very, VERY good.
