white balance?

my apologies. My flippin' job got in the way of things, and I didn't get a chance to go. I'm supposed to go eat on the roof this afternoon with a friend (who is also into photography), so I shall try again.

Stay tuned...

Most digital cameras will tell you to use white for white balancing. They determine exposure from a gray card, not white balance. Mine says either a grey card or white card. You also need to fill the frame with the card, that's why it needs to be big.

A major thing to point out, is that you should not use a standard 18% (film based) gray card for shooting digital. 18% is based on the exposure latitude of most films, and digital does not cover that same range. Consequently, a digital 18% gray is considerably brighter. Look around for digital gray cards.

If I custom white blance, I shoot an 8.5x11 sheet of paper, and get good results.
