There are tons of great, everyday hobbiests and pros out there, but I was wondering... who are you guy's influences that are "famous" photographers?

I've been shooting for about 15 years, but really found myself being influenced by Charlie White.

His photos are waaaay more set up than anything I've dreamed of doing, and I really don't care for his very early work, but the "Understanding Joshua" series and everything after I think is really brilliant.

You can hear a really great NPR interview with him here:

In non-photo work, the band Interpol had him do a video for them after seeing his work:

Without a doubt I consider Ansel Adams to be the most influential photographer to me. However, my instructors at the US Naval Schools of Photography and the many, many outstanding photographers I had the honor of working with in the Navy had the most influence on me at a personal, face to face level.

My major influence is Irving Penn. Proud to say that I have hung out with, listened to lectures and had portfolio reviews with Jay Maisel and Mary Ann Golon.

Mmmm... I suspect people will say a lot about well known or famous photographers... I think one of my favourite photographers is actually a friend of mine, Alison Boland, she was a model who turned photographer. She takes great portraits. www.alisonboland.com

With regard to photo journalistic work, it would have to be James Nachtway, but most of all, I dont allow myself really to be influenced by other people, as often you tend to shoot or copy their style, I just do my own thing....

I really like Annie Liebovitz and Sally Mann's work.

Annie Liebovitz is great. That is, if I'm thinking of the same person. She's the one that takes portraits of children that are, well, a bit out there in their overall look? Surreal in a way. Right?

Wow! She has some excellent work! Some very creative shots in there, and the post-processing is top-notch. Thanks for posting her!

Actually, she did celebrity portrature. One of her more famous images is the picture that appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone of john lennon and yoko ono naked. One of my most favorite pictures ever, I think... She also did the grateful dead, bob dylan and more recently she did the first pictures of Suri Cruise (and tom and katie..) She did a lot of milk ad's too I think. She's known for being a hard ass on the shoots, extremely detail oriented. I actually LOVE the pictures she's taken of her own children the best of everything, though. They are amazing..

Sally Mann is the one that does the kind of "out there" photos of children.. controversial cuz she did a lot of them nude.

Ohh and how could I have forgotten Richard Avadon?
