Why a lens this big?

Both of my main lenses are around the same length and weight (the canon is a *bit* bigger and heavier but it's a constant size and the weight is perfectly balanced). I have the lens in the original pic but f/4L (thinner and lighter). It's a fantastic lens. The IS on those lenses is incredible too.
