Why no love for the prime pipe? (200 f2.8)

Nikon has an old AF 180mm f2.8, which is close. I had one for years and loved it.

I haven't used that, but it looks like the same generation as the old old 300 F4. Built like a tank, great IQ, but a little slow to focus?

Samples from the Canon for @spiralout462 and anyone else... You have to get very close to make it work for large birds, like under 50 feet.. Full sized JPEG, not edited or cropped. Opened in Canon DPP and saved as a JPEG.. So basically SOOC

I just lost another auction at the buzzer! It was a heartbreaker, but I don't want to spend to much, otherwise I would just get a 300mm.
