Why the discrepancy with the meaning of the acronym EXIF?

Hey there,

Why the discrepancy with the meaning of the acronym EXIF? Either it is "Exchangeable Image File" or "Extended Interchange Format". I have seen it documented both ways from different photography reference sources. Which is correct, and what is the difference?

I don't know why the discrepency. Some people think ECM records stands for East Coast Music, when in fact it means Editions of Contemporary Music.

It's like DVDs, too. I've heard people call them both "Digital Video Discs" and "Digital Versatile Discs." I guess a lot of abbreviations have different interpreted meanings.
