I've attached an old manual lens to force me to learn my camera better-the Series E 50mm f/1.8..

But, unfortunately, when I pop my flash up, the flash symbol just blinks at me when I depress the shutter release.. If I turn the flash off, the camera takes pictures with no problem.. What's it looking for?

Thanks.

The D50 cannot meter with manual lenses and that includes flash metering. Your flash has no way of "knowing" how much power to use for an exposure with a manual lens, so you need to set your flash power manually in the camera menus.

That's a great lens, you're going to have a great time with it. I have the same one for my D40.

The D50 will not meter with AI, AI-S and Series E lenses. They happen to be manual lenses, but some reading this may think that the D50 doesn't matter on Manual Mode. Just a little egg of knowledge for clarities sake.
