IMO, it's a very weird period to buy lenses for limited-budget APS-C Nikon users. It seems full frame is going to get into the consumer area (probably in a year or two), so getting a FF lens would be best, but some of them are just not nearly as useful on DX bodies. The 14-24 is a great lens, sharp from center to extreme borders on FF. However, the focal range on DX bodies is 21-36mm - a really weird range to pay USD2000 for.
If you are looking to replace your kit lens, then either get the Nikkor 17-55mm f2.8 (DX lens), Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 (DX lens too) or if you plan on going full frame in the future, get a Nikkor 24-70mm f2.8. If you need a lens to expand the wide end, then I'd really suggest the Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 (http://www.kenrockwell.com/tokina/11-16mm.htm).
