This is a film image I made then colored a little (okay more than a little) It was meant to be a poster shot. It was meant to give the viewer a sense of contrast between the subject and the backqround. I'm not sure it might be a little too depressing.

That's what I'm struggling with. Is it too depressing.

I don't see it as depressing at all. I quite like the treatment done to it. The purple of the flowers works well to contrast with the rest of the scene.
