Hi I have a canon 500d with a Sigma 70-300 lens but it's just not been able to get far enough. I don't have a lot of money 2nd lens is fine for me.

If you can find a used Tamron 150-600mm in your neck of the woods I'd say go for it. That's what I use and if needed you can always add an extender later on.

I would recommend a 400mm prime lens thy is what I am using

Are you asking what lens to get? Probably a good idea to state your budget.

The best bang for your buck is going to be the Canon 400mm F5.6. Even cropped to 600mm it is sharper than the Sigma 150-600 Contemporary and the 1st gen 150-600 Tamron. The new Tamron and the Sigma Sport may be sharper but again they are more expensive.
