I really like LensWork, but I am looking for something similar in color. I don't care about the amount of ads but I do not want a magazine that only does equipment reviews or ones that are loaded with photoshop tips I would never use. The more artistic pictures, more photographer's perspective when he clicked it and more techniques the better.

    Anything like that out there?

I've been half-heartedly keeping my eye open for the same thing for months now. Please, someone who knows, answer that question. :)

Tricky to find I think = once you cut out the gear and photoshop based mags there is not a lot left - many that do give technique tips tend to aim more at the beginner and less at those after a more meaty or indepth article, problem is that at the moment even the book world (newer releases) are mostly like that and its catering for the sudden influx of new photographers as a result of digital.
I think for now you are stareing at the best source for that kind of stuff - websites. Some amatures give good lines on their work and there are many pros that also talk both on their sites and also in forums about their subject.

jpg magazine isn't bad. It's pretty much all photos. I think it's all photos submitted by average joes if you're cool with that.

You know, that means there's a gap in the market. Maybe the experienced folks on here should form a little group of contributors and produce a monthly ezine or, if someone wanted to invest, an actual monthly magazine. There's plenty of information to populate such a publication and plenty of people with know-how to help make it happen.

    Just a thought.

If you can read Japanese there's many that are really great. They typically cover equipment only but for each item they cover the techniques surrounding the item's strengths. They're usually quarterlies and between 350 and 600 pages - 2/3 to 3/4 of the pages are color. Some are limited series and then just keep changing the topic or focus for more and more series.

I don't like typical American rags that are like 35 to 50 pages and 1/2 to 2/3 are just ads. :(

Here's a few from Japan (there may be American versions of these I dunno)

etc. etc. etc. there are 100s. I don't see all of them in book shops or on the magazine racks but in just about every camera shop there are 2 or 3 hundred.

I'm not sure how any of this helps you but... :D

Wow, nice. :) I never really thought about alternate languages. I suppose it would be useful to someone who can read it. Thanks for mentioning.

By the way, just as an update, I just heard back from Chris Dickie, the Editor of Ag Magazine at http://www.picture-box.com. It is a little expensive at almost US $100 for 4 issues a year but based on the little research I have done prior to contacting him, checking out the contents of the back issues on the site and talking to the Editor directly, I am thinking this could be it. Guess I will go ahead and order it soon. Once the first issue arrives, I will post a review and also if it would fit the bill.

In the meanwhile, I will keep my eyes peeled for other good alternatives too, so do keep posting your lists, experiences and reviews. :)

That's about what they go for here too. Between $15 to $25 an issue. The cheeper ones $7 or $8 are usually thicker 500+ pages and more than half B&W with lots and lots of ads.

There's something about them tho - they remind me of Boys Life or some other kiddy rag and not to be taken seriously. Probably not true but it feels that way at a glance.

Well, it does seem to have Bill Jay as a regular columnist like LensWork. Let's see how it fares. :)

Others I found in my brief research to be similar but not quite are:
    American Photo
    Nature Photographer
    Outdoor Photography (UK)
    Phot-Art International (Europe)
    Photo Life (Canada)
    Photo Techniques
    Professional Photographer (UK)
    View Camera

But, none seems to be having interesting content at least from the table of contents. So, unless someone vouches for how good one of them are, I guess I'd rather not try.

Digital Photo Pro is pretty good, it has a number of articles highlighting pro careers, the pics are outstanding (a lot of fashion, advertising or celebrity style). You can check out back issues online for the articles (they tend not to put the pics though).

Another good one with lot's of techniques and tutorials (although often targeted to beginners, they do have some pretty cool stuff they talk about) is Practical Photography (UK mag).
