Yes I know what you mean, I was having difficulty controlling spill, but in hindsight I probbly could have put the flash further away to increase the spill on the subject and managed the shooting position to control the light on the backdrop.
Its a nice idea and a good effect but the image does not stand alone without explaination; I have no idea what it means (maybe I am just not 'deep' enough).
The coffee brush looks nice but again I am not sure what it has to do with the image other than to frame the subject in the bottom right...

I was looking for a sort of meanacing look accentuating the equipment details.

I think you might be right on the crop, I have plenty of space to expand the original out to the left and I think I may do that.

yes the effect you are talking about is from post, it does have the effect of lightening the blacks.
I am working with it as a style as it is a bit different and works with a range of different shots, I am hoping it will grow on you!
Well my long awaited off-camera lighting setup arrived today and with the wife away I was forced to model for myself... Anyway here are a couple of shots from my first foray into off-camera lighting, please feel free to comment / critique as you wish; it is always appreciated.

Fairly typical unfortunately, I am alwasy off shooting stuff while everyone else justs ggets on with life!
So, inspired by all your comments I just want to post one more shot. This early shot used fill flash and is properly exposed, and although I have kept the same tonal effect I have removed both the ugly vignettes and the halo artifacts.
Unfortunatley the shot does not stand alone very well IMO...
I am not seeing that, the post workflow was simpley to adjust exposure, reduce saturation a touch then a tinted overlay set to colour dodge and the 2o/c spot lighting effect, which brought out a nice tone IMO but did produce the unsightly vignettes.

I agree, I do use on camera flash to fill (heck the D40 is actually very good at it with 1/500 synch speed) buti made the decision not to for these. Off camera is merely my next project an I believe will open up a huge number of options.
