Try doing some B/W at high ISO. The extra grainy pics may look good. Check if they have any shop lights that you can use. If they do use them to increase the light.

I would use GIMP (Freeware) and place the 500$ on equipment and a book or 2 on photography. I'm not sure but GIMP may have limitations with RAW.

You may want to try a gorillapod. Its a pocket sized flexible tripod for about 50$. I don't have one, but I've heard that they are very handy.
