Actually controlling swelling through the first few stages and even later stages is important. When I'd get someone post-op who finally came to outpatient PT, I'd always recommend gradient compression socks/stockings. Swelling slows down healing.

Retired Physical Therapist that I am, I'm hoping that Discharge Planning at the hospital is or has set you guys up with a walker, bedside commode and possibly a scooter that your husband can kneel the effected leg on for faster mobility. Elevation at this stage is supremely important.
