a-dep is the automatic depth of field (not aperture dependant) setting that basically uses all 9 focus points on canons to ensure that everything in the frame is in focus. basically its supposed to make life easier for you if you don't have a distance scale.
the 718b is for POINT AND SHOOT cameras. and it has an integrated head. bad choice unless you wanna eventually see your D40 on the ground in pieces. keep in mind, other things thats affect its stability are wind, bumps, etc. what is your budget? if you don't mind buying used i gave you a link to...
