I just got my first FX SLR this year (D3) and kept my D7000 as backup. After experiencing the differences between DX & FX, I've actually been planning to sell my D7000 and upgrade all my lenses to FX because I have using DX lenses on my D3. I feel like I'm losing so much in my work so in my...
I use the cheap route and never even bothered upgrading ever since I first got into lighting a couple years ago. All of my portrait photos on my website were taken with basic Nikon SB600's and the triggers, stands, umbrellas, softbox, etc etc almost all came from China on eBay to save money.
I...
Me specifically, I want to be a photographer in Major League Baseball someday. Currently I work for the Atlanta Braves Triple-A team as an intern. What I do to stay inspired and work harder is look at work done in the big leagues, especially by Braves team photographer Pouya Dianat. I check out...
I've always used Costco for my prints and have never been disappointed. I love getting my photos blown up to 20x30 posters and still look perfectly clear (and for only $8.99!). I even made my portfolio into a book for about $75. Every product they offer has amazing quality and it saves money...
One time I was at Little Five Points in Atlanta which has a lot of homeless, and there's one that I see every time so I really wanted a pic of him. I simply approached him, told him I'm a photographer and asked if I can take a picture of him to add to my portfolio, and in return I'd give him a...
Before even reading this I automatically thought the 24-70 would be a good choice. Your 18-200 should be good enough to cover subjects at greater focal lengths. I don't own the 24-70 but I've seen so much great work come from it so that gets my vote.
Here's one from a recent shoot at the abandoned Pullman Yard in Atlanta
Nikon D3
Nikkor 85mm f/1.8
(2) SB600's
1 shot through translucent umbrella, camera left
1 shot through knockoff Gary Fong diffuser, camera left, aimed at subject's hair
Thanks guys....I will admit I know I do over-sharpen them a little. I sharpen them as I'm first editing them and I sharpen them again after I resize them. I have an addiction to sharpness...and a little addiction to adding a lot of contrast so that's probably where the over-saturated look is...
I've been working hard to build a career in MLB photography and my dream finally came true this season as I've been hired to be an intern for the Gwinnett Braves, the Triple-A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves. The biggest game I'd be shooting ended up being my first day on the job! The Atlanta...
For me I thought it was cool & all when I got my first SLR but I didn't start getting serious until I got my hands on my first f/2.8 lens. Then when I got my first f/1.8 lens it was on!
I understand the situation you're in and it seems pretty tough to handle. I too have never charged any family members for photos but luckily I haven't run into a situation like yours where they keep wanting more and more work out of me. But if I were in your position, I'd still keep it free but...
I'm all for urban exploration. I love shooting abandoned buildings, especially if they have history. That's always a fun & unique style of photography

I have to agree with the first comment.
Knowing what lens to use is something you're supposed to question yourself with and have a answer to as well. I've used everything from a 10.5mm f/2.8 to a 300mm f/2.8 for portraits, so there's tons of options; it all just depends on the look you want.
