you should def check out Canon's, I'm not saying they are crap, I'm just saying that at the 40/50D level and below, I believe that their AF system is inferior to comparable D300-D200-D90-D80 offerings, that's all. I firmly believe the 1D mk3 STILL gives the D3 a run for its money both in speed...

i agree with the fixed aperture comment - especially at the long end, the difference between f/4 and f/5.6 is substantial. . .personally, I would give the Sigma 10-20 f/3.5 a try, and if it's soft, get it "recalibrated" by Sigma; the Tokina 11-16 is an option as well, same situation, usually...

and their pro models are AMAZING!! the 1d 3 is still king of speed for ANY pro model (nikon or canon). . .10fps, 51 AF points, and amazing high ISO performance. . .if it weren't for my investment in Nikon lenses/gear and the need for expensive canon lenses. . .

Jerry - did you try out the 50 1.4G from Nikon? That is a sharp lens on the D700 for sure! congrats. . .

you're shooting with the wrong body, and by and large, Canon's AF system on their semi-pro level bodies (40D, etc.) are a lot slower than comparable Nikkor offerings (D200, etc.)

WOW - that is really impressive, it AF's with a D40x? My mom's been bugging me about a "super" zoom lens, might get her this for her bday. . .

just an fyi, BestBuy has the D200 for $599 right now, add it to the cart, and the discount will be taken. . .I just "upgraded" from my D40x for $618 (shipping and tax!). . .absurd how much easier it is to use a D200 over a D40x, hate the menu's!!

I really feel like we're comparing apples to oranges. . .the 1D3 is standard issue for photojournalists, 10fps, super rugged, and built to thunk around. . . .5D2 is quite the opposite, not very fast, no crop factor, and suited for the landscaper, wedding shooter, or studio nut. . .

I've been using, thanks to my repeated stress injury of typing and PS'ing, the Microsoft Natural Laser 6000. . .it has 5 buttons, and is EXTREMELY PS friendly, especially the magnifier button for when you are outlining, etc. . . I was, due to my RSI, restricted to ergonomic mice though. . .

I would recommend a 8gb high speed for sure. . .I recently got a 16gb class 4 and ONLY WHEN PUSHED do I notice it taking longer to fill up (buffer ceiling I assume). . .not the case for the 8gb class 6 (Sandisk Ultra III is class 6 right?). . .adorama has specials on them as well right now. . .

it's a pretty slow lens, but has amazing saturation and depth when shot in good lighting. . .I bought mine new several years ago (2007?) for $219 - so your deal is a complete steal!!

and to be fair, if you try them out (weight, size, analog buttons, etc.) you might find the D90 will suffice. . .frankly, at about $800 for the D90 and $1500 for the D300, you could get the D90 + Tamron or Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 for the price of one D300, which is essential in weddings. . . .2...
