When to just say screw it all?

Do you have any portraiture experience at all? judging by your other recent thread you’re interesting in jumping right into boudoir; which is … suspect, but not only suspect but also about the most difficult genre to do well in and If you don’t have any photos of people in your portfolio, do...

Why don’t film makers use polarizers?

oh I don’t think there’s any shortage of mistakes to fix! but man, I could do without these camera reflections in windows. Lots of paradox and no good way to solve a 3D track…

Why don’t film makers use polarizers?

I am a compositing and vfx artist by profession and so one of the things I do a lot of is remove crew and camera reflections from windows. I work on a lot of prime time shows on major networks, some with extremely large budgets, and yet I frequently get shots that anyone could look at and...

exactly what makes a great photo?

Yes! This is why the artists’ intent is unimportant to the function and meaning of the image. After a work is completed the artist becomes the audience and his or her opinion is as valid as anyone else’s.

    Home improvement question

@480sparky and others - thank you for your help. I did get an oscillating tool (Makita, because that's how I roll). I was able to feel the plaster, so that wasn't an issue aside from destroying my blade by the time I was done. I think it turned out pretty well :) Still need to work out some...

exactly what makes a great photo?

on one side you seem to be saying composition matters and is one quality of a great photograph, but on the other you're saying composition is inevitable and yet still good composition is contrived. So which is it? What I'm saying is that composition is the language that images exist in. That's...

exactly what makes a great photo?

Composition is important, like I said there has to be structure to make sense; but I don't think it's what makes a photograph successful. I've taken plenty of well composed photographs that aren't very good, and I've taken photos which the entire point was to lack any structure at all. I...

    Home improvement question

I’m worried about cutting into the wall if I don’t have a way to set the cutting depth? Maybe I don’t need to be… i do have clearance though, the beadboard sits about 2 feet above the floor and it doesn’t sit behind the range hood, which is going to be removed and replaced as well.

    Home improvement question

I recently bought my first house and have been busy getting things to our liking. It's a classic, modest home built in 1942 with a lot of midcentury charm we're keeping, so the bead board backsplash in the kitchen is staying, just with a coat of bright red paint and a few coats of gloss poly...

exactly what makes a great photo?

I think we agree. I just wanted to point this out. - As for snapshots I think it has more to do with function. A snapshot is intended to augment memories, it’s intended to be meaningful only to the people that were present when the image was taken. Almost everything I do is intentionally...

is the depth of field suppose to be subtle?

To second Ysarex, ‘acceptable focus’ is defined where the resolving power of the imaging system is less than the diameter of the circle of confusion (in this context I am referring to CoF as the projected image of the aperture that make up the image - lovingly referred to as ‘bokeh balls’ when...

Are camera phones as good as digital cameras?

While maybe not the best comparison, here are a few photos of my children. Please forgive that the eyes are oof, they're just snapshots. This is of my daughter which I just took using an apple 12 Pro Max using portrait mode. Here is one I took a couple yers back with the then, and certainly...

exactly what makes a great photo?

composition though can get carried away: certainly there needs to be structure, but structure can take many forms, and there’s a tendency to use whats essential pseudoscientific western numerology as some golden rule (pun intended). Although often even more entrenched in Western tradition...

is the depth of field suppose to be subtle?

This myth is one of the most baffling to me. Anyone who has used a a camera should have an intuitive understanding that FOV is not linear. https://www.desmos.com/calculator/go8yy8uiix To illustrate this, I've plotted both DOF (red along y) at any given focal length (x) at a given working...
