Old, manual lenses...anyone else still play around with them?

Hmmm, you like my photo more than I do! I just got surprised by the star-burst effect! Thank you for the compliment, but the photo doesn't really have that much going for it, I feel it is a little boring, but if other people like it, maybe I'm over critical. I think if the sky was more...

Old, manual lenses...anyone else still play around with them?

I just upgraded to a D7100 and I'm loving it. Then I found a little manual lens quite by accident, and I'm burning to tell the story  I've been wanting to try out some older lenses for a long time (because I'm a stingy bastard / because photography is a side hobby that I can't really...

Meh, I take back what I said about your color looking too washed out, I can't see the difference any more (viewing carefully on another monitor now)

Derrel, Thank you. I did in deed play around with cropping. (FWIW The photos are already cropped, and some of the palm trees lost with that) - and also found that cropping more on the left removed the space into which the girls on the slide needed to move, and from the right it destroyed the...

While walking on the promenade a couple of days ago I chanced upon a sight and had to take some photos. I liked the feelings of fun and freedom, with the beautiful warm colors of the sunset. Unfortunately shortly after the children left. These 4 photos are essentially the best but each one...

    Focus problem

Derrel, I can see the focus sensors, but not well enough to see if there is something. But your suggestion made me think if there is something, it might not block all the sensors. So I tested by taking photos, each time using a different sensor selected for the photo. One photo, taken using...

    Focus problem

Derrel what you say makes complete sense to me, except that I have the same problem with a friend's Tamron (18-270) and with my backup 18-55mm lens. All of them refuse to focus from 18-35 mm and suddenly from that point onward become fine!?

Any chance you'll be in Cape Town this week?

    Focus problem

Those are good suggestions. I'm going to look through my photos, even to find out how long ago this started! I tried with a Friend's Tamron 18-270 lens and had the same issue! I also tried my lenses on his body but I was in a hurry and his ISO was set to auto so the comparison is difficult...

    Focus problem

I have a D5100 and use an 18-105 as my walk-about lens. I've had this camera for about 4 years and recently went through the 9999-photos count. Suddenly a few days ago I noticed that 99% of my photos were soft, badly so. After taking a deep breath I did a few tests. 1. All photos taken with...

    First Steps into PP

Hi Peano, Thank you, you seem to be the only one taking much interest in my post :-( The colors look nice the way you did it, though I must say the original colors are quite true to what it looked like - those bushes are somewhat dull green and the sky was very blue - I remember noticing it as...

    First Steps into PP

I don't know what happened to my reply so I will write it again My editing has been mostly "destructive" as per your meaning, though some of my editing is done directly in UFRaw which is not so destructive, at least that is my understanding. I appreciate the principle - it only makes sense...

    First Steps into PP

I decided that it is time to take the plunge and start learning how to post process to make my photos better. I took my son on a hike along with a group up Lions Head and got a few of my favorite shots, of which I decided a few could do with post processing. I love being out doors, in...

How come Gradient ND filters actually work?

This Telephoto zoom lenses shows that light from a point to one point, eg above the ND grad horizon, do hit and pass through the top and bottom halfs of the lens (and filter), and do get focused back to a single point.

Just a dump question about lenses. Really!!!

The Ferarri vs Kia comparisson is just too apt! The faster ones (cars, lenses) cost more! With Lenses, "faster" means it collects the same amount of light in a shorter amount of time.

    Should I buy it?

Thank you ... so ... Any alternative recommendations? What I did not mention was that a single lens giving both extra zoom (300mm) _AND_ Macro capability. It isn't extreme telephoto, nor extreme Macro.... but it _IS_ a single lens to carry (in addition to the one on the camera most of the...

    Should I buy it?

I have an option to buy a secondhand Sigma 70-300 DG APO lens for about $180.00 Photography does not take up my entire life - most of the times I just capture the kids growing up, the antics of our animals, the places and sights we see, and occasionally I see something amazing and try to...
