    Flash vs. Speedlight vs. Thyristor

I've wondered for a while now... what's the difference? Pros, cons? Google was disappointingly unhelpful.

Ok, I can take it... How much is it worth?

A friend of my father's had this lens given to him. He doesn't do photography more than to take snapshots at family events, so he has no use for it. I'm going to talk with him today about buying/trading for the lens and I want to go with at least an idea of how much it's worth. My best...

Just bought an XSi , have some questions

I just picked up an XSi (450D) on ebay for $295. It should be a considerable upgrade from my current 300D. I'd like to know how the 450D does with long exposures (star trails, mostly). My first gen 300D is understandably noisy when exposures are longer than 10-15 seconds. Should the 450D...

    Love hurts.

I haven't been able to get out with the camera lately, so I was going through some of my older shots. I came across this one and thought I'd get some feedback. Lover hurts. *EDIT* I was looking at it and decided it needed some color. #2

    Into the fire

I was at a bonfire with my camera. This is the result. It's 3 exposures put together manually in photoshop (photomatix didn't like the moving flames). Please let me know what you think.

IT'S ALIVE!!! My 300D is back from the brink!

I posted yesterday how my camera's secondary mirror was failing to flip up when taking pictures, causing the pictures to be mostly black as the mirror hung down over the image sensor. After some research, I found out it was a small plastic pin that had broke. Luckily I was able to replace the...

    RIP Canon 300D :(

My trusty 300D has finally bit the dust. I was taking pictures of a laptop to sell when all of a sudden the pictures started becoming mostly black, with only about a quarter of the image showing up. At first I though my built in flash got triggered some how and my shutter was outrunning it...

    Aperture and Landscape Photography

When doing a landscape, is it best to stop the aperture all the way down? Or is it better to find the lenses "sweet spot"? I've heard most lenses are sharpest a few steps down. Do they get softer on the other side? I haven't played much with the really narrow f/stops like f/22. I'm going...

    Cleaning a mirror lens

So I bought a 750mm Hanimex lens for $30 that's a bit dirty. Unfortunately, it's dirty inside, too. Not too bad, but enough that it's probably going to effect image quality. My question is, can I just use windex on the mirror? Or are they coated and need a special cleaner?

Valley View Glades - Part 1 - First HDR Attempt

I've seen quite a few really well done HDRs on the forums lately and thought I'd give it a stab. I love sunsets but one exposure can never do them justice. These were taken at a conservation area a few miles from my home. I wanted to test out my new-to-me Sigma 30-70mm f/2.8 m42 lens. I...

How does your camera handle high ISO?

I was going to post on Mo's thread (which got way out of hand and was locked) because I thought his original post was useful. I've been considering upgrades to my 300D because I like shooting in low light. Scratch that. I love shooting in low/no light. My 300D tries. It really does. But...

First shots with the Suntar 135mm f/2.8 prime

Got the Suntar 135mm f/2.8 in a couple days ago and had a chance to take some test shots. I really like it. Wide open, it produces some "interesting" bokeh (see last picture). I'm curious why it does that. Anyway, here they are. C&C if you want. #1: #2: 100% crop of the first...

    First lightning shots

I've never been so in awe of mother nature as I was tonight. We had the thunderstorm to end all thunderstorms tonight. My sister and I went up to some bluffs that overlook a valley along Highway 30. It was constant flashes, but most weren't bolts, they were just lighting up the clouds...

Anybody know anything about this lens?

It's a Suntar Auto 135mm f/2.8 M42 mount. I just bought it, so I hope it's good. The only example images I could find where these. The pictures look nice and sharp and have good color, so I'm hopeful. I want to start getting into portraits and I've read repeatedly that 135mm f/2.8 lenses...

Roxsen M42 to Canon EF Lens Adapter Review

Hello everyone. Yesterday, I finally received my M42 to EF adapter and figured I'd share my thoughts for anyone considering something similar. The Auto Focus (AF) Confirm Chip and EF side of the adapter: The M42 side of the adapter: The EF Lens cap that came with it (I wasn't...

    I shot some people.

Been practicing some people shots. Please let me know what you think. How could I make them better? Thanks, Ray #1 - "Resistance is futile" #2 - "Open up" #3 - "Washing hands" #4 - "That's enough"

    Macro shots - C&C

I still haven't received my M42 to EF lens mount adapter, so I decided to try some of the old "turn the lens around" macro shots. It worked pretty well. Since it's a manual lens, I can control aperture even with the lens facing the wrong way. :D It's a big help! I learned that...

    I finally got my

looks-like-it-was-buried-in-someone's-backyard lens! It's a Petri 50mm f/1.8. And a few days ago, my Mamiya/Sekor 55mm f/2 came in! Plus, while we were out shopping for my sister's wedding, we stopped at a resale shop and I found this Pentax K1000! It's a whole kit; camera, lens...
