I'm ready for my first big purchase lens wise and don't know which way to go. I need a good all purpose lens like the 24-70 yet I find myself needing the extra focal length the 70-200 provides. I walk around downtown to catch action on the weekends, weddings, and outdoor sports from time to time. I shoot indoors often and I've had spacing issues using my nifty fifty on a crop sensor so I can only imagine the frustration at 70mm. I have funds for either or + some so if anyone has any input, suggestions, etc etc. its greatly appreciated.

What I have so far.
Canon 7D
50mm 1.8
28-135mm kit lens

personally I use a set of 3 optics tha I find very satisfying for most kind of shooting (considering buying a 100 mm macro though)
Canon 24-105mm F4 L USM IS
Canon 70-200mm F2.8L USM
Canon 100-400mm F4.5-5.6 L USM IS
each zoom covers part of the range from the previous one, quite handy in reportage

I think you would probably use the 24-70 more. I had both when the 7D was my primary camera, though my walk-around lens was a EFS 15-85. I shoot a lot of action stuff up close and found the 15-85 worked better for the crop sensor camera when I was in close. Now, the 24-70 is my main lens, the 70-200 stays on the 7D and the efs15-85 mainly sits on the shelf. The 24-70 will work out great should you ever switch to a full frame sensor. It works out to about a 38-112mm on the 7D, plenty versatile. Good luck
