350D Problem

My 350D is stuck on a setting and I can't work out how to reset it back to standard.

It's to do with metering and AF, Whenever I half-press the shutter: instead of metering and focusing a little '*' appears down in the bottom left corner of the viewfinder and the camera won't focus or meter the light. If I want it to focus and meter the light I have to hold the '*' button and and then press the shutter button - it never used to do this.

It's annoying at the best of times and i've already tried resetting the factory values to no avail.

I think you have the exposure locked.
