420EX Flash with T3i

I bought a used 420EX to use as an extra flash for my T3i. The problem is that it will flash but the photos do not show the flash (the pictures are too dark) I can also get it to flash in slave mode but the same thing happens a when it is in the hotshoe. I thought I had everything programed right and the flash is E-TTL but why wont it work? Is the flash bad?

Hi welcome o the forum. Have you messed with flash control settings?
