Those of you out there with 580EX Speedlites might be able to answer this...

Does the camera use the IR light emitted from the Speedlite to focus or does the Speedlite tell the camera what to focus on by emitting IR to judge distance?

It's not a problem for me i'm just curious about how it works so I can take advantage of it. :)

All answers/ideas are praised in advance. :)
 
To my knowledge, the flash gun emits that IR (ish) and red beam which helps the autofocus in the camera/lens lock on. When this happens, the camera relays the focal length to the flash gun, along with the aperture and the flash gun calculates its output and fires accordingly.
