70-300mm Focusing Problems

Hello there everyone,

One of my lenses is having an autofocus problem. It will either not autofocus at all, it will do it flawlessly or it will make a weird noise while doing it.

Anyone have any ideas what the problem is and a fix maybe? I'm willing to take it in. Hope it's not broken!

They make several variants of this lens, is it a VR or non VR for example?

Without knowing which brand of lens, I'd likely send it off to the manufacturer for repair. Something is apparently loose or not functioning 100% of the time.

However, the non-focusing could be caused by a too-small maximum aperture (f3.5, for example) in too-low of light, or having image stabilization turned on while on a tripod, or even trying to focus closer than the minimum focus distance indicated on the lens barrel (or by switch setting on some lenses).
