What's new

A good little camera to take everywhere?

I think a $100 point and shoot will do nothing but disappoint.
Now I know that the SD 880 is not as good as the S95, but what I mean is that you can get a $130 camera and it won't be a disappointment. S95 might be good, but it is definitely much closer to this $130 P&S in terms of IQ, than to any cheapest DSLR on the market. You can have fun with the SD1300, just don't expect it to be anywhere near your DSLR, in terms of IQ at least.

Someone typed it on the internet, it must be true.

If I ever buy a new compact camera, it's going to be the new Fuji full-frame digital rangefinder. Now it's going to sell for like $1,000 so it's not exactly cheap but it's also not as pricey as an m

As far as I know (x100 isn't sold yet), its neither a rangefinder nor fullframe. APSC sensor with autofocus with no rangefinder mechanism.

So, I asked for a cheaper, simple digital camera, and the suggestions thus far:

A $400 Canon S95
A new cell phone
A $1000 Rangefinder
a $7000 full-frame DSLR
a $600 Panasonic four-thirds format camera

"hey guys, I need a small, fuel-efficient car to get groceries and pick up my kids. Any suggestions?"

"Tesla Roadster"
"No way, get a Lamborghini"
"Excursion's the way to go for sure"
"Shelby Mustang is the best car for the money"
"Tractors are pretty fun these days"

...

I went ahead with my initial gut instinct and picked up a Canon SD1300. Yeah, it's not made of titanium alloy and has interchangable lenses and a 43-megapixel sensor, but I'll feel better taking it to the pub and taking pictures of my friends, or maybe the beer itself.

I'll let you know how it fares.

Damnit... I just checked and you're dead on right. Wow, what a buzzkill.

Good luck with the new camera OP :)

Canon Powershot A490.

Nikon CoolPix L22. EDIT: OH, I see you already bought a compact Canon. Nevermind.

Both decent cameras, but I'm always put off by cameras requiring AA batteries... it seems so primitive nowadays.

Yeah, but with newer 2,700 milli-ampere hour batteries, they're not so bad...it also keeps the camera lower in cost...

I'd personally go with some Canon P&S to be honest. I always used Canon. Their flash just works so much better. But the Sony ones are really good also. I own both now and like both equally.

Valid point. I admit, I haven't studied battery technology much.

As part of a belated christmas present, I was given $125 to amazon.com... i figured, rather than nickel and dime myself to death with knicknacks and gewgaws, I might as well get what every photo dork needs... another camera! :P

I'm currently leaning towards the Canon SD1300; it's light, very compact, and it's Canon, so chances are it won't be 100% garbage. Are there any other models I should be checking out? I just want something I can take with me everywhere (sometimes the DSLR is a little difficult to lug to the pub, or to work).

No. You didn't.

You asked for camera suggestions on a photography forum.

Thats what you were given. Next time, be more specific and your response will be more to your liking.

My advice is top make sure that whatever camera you buy handles low-light situations adequately. That was a problem for me with a Canon Elph P&S camera that I bought for a trip to Europe a couple years ago.

For $125? Maybe a IXUS of some kind (clearance prices). I think i've seen the no-longer-current models here for about that price.
