We have spotted three of these young Pileated Woodpeckers on our property. They must be from the same nesting because when we first noticed them they would be hanging out together. The one in this image hasn't yet grown a full crest on his top notch and his tail feathers are not long like a mature adult.

Very cool!

I've seen a pair by me and the male was even working on one of my trees, at the bottom of all places(?).

But they seem to be very shy and I have yet to get any pictures worthy of sharing.

I've always said that their call belongs in a jungle more than the woods.
