Advice for a newbie

Aww, you're such a sweetie!!!!

Yeah, a Canon Ae1 (I have that and an A1) is a good starter. Fairly cheap too on Ebay, even the lenses.

the Ae1 and A1 are great cameras
in the UK you can get a lot of vey good cheap canon lenses for those cameras.
The Ae1 with the pentax MEsuper was amoungst the top sellers in the late 70's early 80's
I remember wishing i could afford an A1 at the time

I just wanted to welcome you to the forum, forgot to say that in my post :) (I won't be doing camera advice and such, since I seem to be typing all the wrong and unhelpfull stuff.. :p)

Good luck finding a camera! Looking forward to seeing you wife's pictures (and maybe your pictures as well..? :)) You'll both have load of fun with this new hobby, I'm sure.

That's a tough question. Fundamentally, no. It's just bigger film.

But I do think most modern medium format gear is easier to learn with a background in 35mm gear. You can find vintage "consumer" model medium format cameras that are very simple to use, but once 35mm film became popular, medium format gear was targeted towards professionals.
But 35mm is easier to learn after mf too.

Now I wish someone suggested a Rollei at the very beginning. Would save me a LOT of money.

Since I use film only for portraits, I don't need TOO many exposures. Can use the extra quality and additional push to think and compose that manual format really provides.

A rollei would have been perfect for the "art" and playing in the darkroom for me. After all, how many people including yourself (Matt) end up having one and using it a lot?

I would say get a Canon Rebel. Have both manual and auto. Interchangeable lenses. And reasonably cheap.

Here are a few I found on ebay

Good Luck!
