Hi everyone!

I currently own a Canon Powershot SX40 and am saving for an upgrade to a Nikon D7000 this fall. It will be my first DSLR. I am looking for a set up that will allow me to travel lightly if necessary and photograph family gatherings, take portraits, and dabble in some nature/landscape shots. I am on a budget (max $1500 in all) and plan on buying the equipment used or refurbished.

I am considering the following lenses for my setup:

-Nikon 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX
-Nikon 55-200mm f/4-5.6 ED IF AF-S DX VR
-Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM (this will probably be bought at a later date)

Let me know what you think about my picks and thanks in advance for any advice!

To be honest I would just get a standard 18-55 kit lens. Once you learn how to use that you can think about another lens.

Theres no point in spending loads of money on gear you dont know how to use.

Refurbished D700 $750
Refurbished 18-200mm F4 VR $500-650
50mm F/1.8 - $100-200

$1500-1700

The standard kit lens that comes with a D7000 is a 18-105 f/3.5-5.6. It is more than enough for someone just starting out.

With my D7000 im rocking an 18-55mm kit lens. 35mm 1.8g, 50mm 1.8d & i've got a 28-80mm 3.3-5.6g & 55-200mm 4-5.6 on the way.

It really depends what you plan to use your DSLR for, but as has been said in the post just above me the standard kit lens for the D7000 is a 18-105mm, that is a good enough range if you're just starting with DSLR's.
