Advice on Digital Camera

I'm looking into making a camera purchase in the next 3-4 months after my EasyShare CX7430 quit on me two months ago. I want to purchase a better digital camera, because I'm looking into going into photography a bit more seriously. I'm asking for what would be the best point and shoot camera that has between 4-6 MPs, as well as a more professional camera between 5-8 MP. My price range for either camera is between 250-400 dollars, and I'd like a camera with good optical zoom. Any help would be appreciated.

Have a look at the Panasonic Lumix FZ7 is a wonderful camera with a great lens.
