Advice on Nikon D800-Concerned About File Size

Thank you Mike, you hit the nail on the head. I use ControlMyNikon. The Live View it offers is great setting up my shots for "fine guns". As I mentioned above, proper exposure can be trying and very time consuming. It is always a trade off as whether to keep on changing lighting or go ahead and shoot and fix it in Photoshop. My nature is to get it perfect on the front end but it is not always the most efficient way to go.

I agree a D800 would be overkill for online stuff. Most of it is my ego. I have used pro equipment most of my life. I ended my film days with a Hasselblad, Leicaflex, and F4. It is difficult to step down use pro-sumer gear even though it does the job. A D4 would be my first choice for fun stuff, in particular wildlife. I think the resolution of the D800 would be great for product photography short of a medium format.
I did professional photography as a young man. The only professional work I did for years was advertising in my last business which I retired from four years ago. I owned a turf farm and specialized in golf. At the very least my F4 was always with me when I was checking on jobs. I took my Hassey whenever possible. My custom processor died about the time I retired so my film shooting died about the same time.

I opened Mid-South GunSlinger a little over a year ago and am having a ball. I specialize in liquidating firearms whether it be one gun or an entire collection. Photographing and selling fine guns is as close, to the second and third best things in the world, as I can get. Granted, I am no spring chicken but I am still young enough to always strive to improve and never let a day pass without learning something new. One thing for sure, I have never said, "I wish I had bought a cheaper model". I have said the opposite many times.

I hope my competitors keep shooting their images in jpg with a smart phone or pocket camera. You can bet that is the advice I will give them.

Y'all have a great week.

Oh so you occasionally do some part-time professional computer work, do you?

Is that like "I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night". :)

My suggestion was that the process could be sped up by a computer upgrade. Paul Wog, if you know anything about computer upgrades then you know that processor upgrades REQUIRE a motherboard upgrade to move to a more current (than 2012) processor. It's not a motherboard change just to change. It's a change out of necessity IF the OP wants to upgrade the computer. What he chooses to do is his own business and there have been other options presented that certainly are less expensive and may help with his issue.

I am well aware of what programs would need to be on an SSD to utilize the speed increase of the drive.

Perhaps you shouldn't be so quick to judge (and attack) people and realize that there is more than one way to skin a cat and although you may not agree with a differing view you certainly don't need to show your ass by unnecessarily attacking someone.

Peace. And chill out a bit.

Hey bud, the i5-3450 is a newer socket 1155 processor. You're essentially recommending he upgrade to a socket 1150 motherboard or similar just to get a single generation (1 year newer) processor. That's INSANITY! The increase in performance between each generation for your dollar is around 10-15% in most relevant applications.

This isn't a matter of being quick to judge you. You're just plain wrong. I'm not being quick, I'm being diligent. And wasn't judging, I'm mitigating the misinformation that you're bringing to the table.

Here's some judgment for you: You're going to need to suck this one up. You can't go around providing incorrect info & overall bad advice, and then get angry when you're corrected. You didn't do your research into what his processor is capable of when used in Lightroom and Photoshop and other applicable things... and then you went suggesting he upgrade half of his computer. It's one thing to help out and provide suggestions when you don't quite know what's what... it's a whole other thing to actually blatantly tell someone it is a good idea to go spend half a grand or more on something that won't actually help.

just get something with an AMD processor and be done with it.

All I wanted to know was the difference in file transfer rates between a D7100 and a D800. I did not intend on getting a fight started. If I get bored I will start a post with a political or religious tone. That might be a National Guard event.

If anyone needs dueling pistols you know who to call. I rent them with a good weekend rate. Rent is 30% off if only one is fired.

Y'all gave a good week.

awwww..my first like ever..i am honoured. thanks mate.:blushing:

now i do care. so tell me about the equipment that you shoot pictures with.

SO'k, being viable just means that you have a better chance of getting flamed. ;)

Here's a like for you though. +1

Yeah, and if you asked any of a number of other simple questions, you would also predictably get a wide variety of "you're doing it wrong in the first place" etc. responses (both to you and to other people who answer in certain ways like the computer hardware conversation) that don't simply choose one option or the other like you asked. For example:

Q: "My possum keeps biting me and breaking the skin. Do you recommend tea tree oil or coconut oil as a better antibacterial topical ointment?"
Q: "Hey guys, I normally triple check to make sure I locked my front door and turned the stove off before going to bed. I don't think this is enough. Should I increase to quadruple checking, or should I go up to quintuple checking?"
Q: "I'm thinking about upgrading from tallow to beeswax candles for my interior living room lighting. Which is the most cost effective solution these days per watt of lighting?"

Depends on the subject and how I'm feeling.

For this conversation though I use a D800 and either monolights or Metz hammerheads. CT-4 45s and/or 60s Depending on where I am.
