I don't normally use a tripod or monopod when shooting video however I will use a window mount but often I just rest the big lens on the window sill. Here's a sample of that:

I don't use an external mike. I have one but when I tried it blocked the viewfinder. These videos were all shot with my 7D. I'm looking forward to shooting video with my 6D. What I would really like to have is a Canon DSLR that I could shoot video with while using the eyepiece. That would make things so much easier.
